| Note | Following UCD's win in the Intervarsities' Championships, expectations were high for a win by UCD in the Colours Match. These were duly fulfilled with the biggest winning margin in the series to date of 33 pts. UCD's only defeat on the track was in the 4 x 110y relay, the last event of the evening, and that a consolation win for TCD in an unremarkable time due to one of the UCD athletes pulling a muscle. The highlights for TCD were few. Lionel Hatt, the Trinity Captain, took his fifth consecutive win in the Shot Putt in the Colours match and established a new meeting's record in doing so. He repeated his throw double of 1965 with the Discus, bringing his total number of wins in the Colours match to seven. The outstanding performances for UCD were the treble wins by Tom Power in the half mile, mile and three miles and by Sean O'Dwyer in the Long, Triple and High Jumps, as well as the 100y and 220y sprint double by Joe Cummiskey and the 120y and 440y hurdles double by Seán F. Ó Muircheartaigh. The only maximum point event for TCD was the Javelin throw lock-out by Chris Butterworth and an 'undiscovered' talent, German student George Thunecke, who was only persuaded to contest the event for his College a few minutes before the match began! The Women's match comprised three sprints and a relay, with UCD taking the match honours. |
