3rd Mar 1951Celtic XCTCDView116The Universities Cross Country International between the Home Countries was hosted in Ireland for the first time. The course at the foot of the Dublin Mountains comprised four laps of approx. 1.75 miles. It proved to be one of the stiffest courses in Ireland at that time. Each lap contained eight obstacles and a vertical climb of 180 feet (circa 55 metres). The course took the runners over grassland, woodland, ploughed fields, muddy grass lanes, stone lanes and a concrete roadway. The representative nature of the event was diminished by the absence of the Welsh and Scottish Universities as they were unable to send teams for financial reasons. The English Universities team was captained by E.R. Downer (Southampton), an English Senior International and 1951 Universities Athletic Union (British Universities) cross-country champion. G. Boak (Durham) had come fourth in the North of England Senior Cross Country Championship the previous week. The Irish team was captained by W.A. Robertson of Queen's University, that years I.A.A.B Junior Cross-Country Champion. Not unexpectedly English Universities finished their six scoring men inside the first eight positions. However the battle for the individual honours gave Irish Universities much to cheer about. The three individual medallists ran throughout in the order in which they finally placed, with two Irishmen in the first three home.
